BIG
WHITE SKI RESORT ~ Kelowna, B.C.
Big White has some unique
features that make it a very good choice
for families visiting Kelowna,
BC. Big White is a 45 minute drive
from Kelowna. All the accommodation is
'ski-in, ski-out' - very convenient when
parents may be responsible for lugging not
just their own gear but their kid's skis
too. There is a state-of-the-art
children's centre, serviced by the 'Happy
Valley Gondola,' home to the Kid's
Learning Zone, a fantastic Tubing Centre,
a Mini-Skidoo Centre and Skating Rink.
There is also a cosy day lodge that the
kids can nip into to warm up. And if you
can't get your kids to leave at the end of
the day there is an 'After Dark' programme,
so that they can continue the fun and you
can sneak off for a romantic dinner.
Further up the mountain adult beginners
are equally indulged, every lift has a
green run down, so that even the beginners
can enjoy the 2,500 feet of vertical. The
'Gem Lake Express' lift will take you
right to the ridge, from there take the
green run 'Village Way,' followed by 'Ogo
Slow' right to the valley floor - a
pleasant meander that bears repetition.
The area to the right of the village
served by the 'Blackforest Express' and
the 'Bullet Express' has loads of
interconnecting blues and greens that will
keep you happy with it's endless
variations.
Intermediates will also love Big White,
for a never-ending cruiser on which to
practise your GS-turns make your way to
the 'Falcon Chair' - 'Whitefoot' to 'Blue
Sapphire' starts high above the trees
where the views are magnificent and ends
deep in the trees on the valley floor. The
powder bowls are fantastic for the
advanced adrenalin hunters and up this
high, where the tree line thins you may
notice a peculiar phenomenon. The trees
fill up with snow that packs between the
branches, giving the illusion that the
trees have disappeared utterly, huge white
monoliths populate the slopes - locals
call them 'Snow Ghosts.'
